The services listed below represent common examples of individualized resources SDCCD’s WorkAbility III program provides.
Vocational Counseling: WorkAbility III staff are trained to provide employment-driven vocational counseling for students who may have already defined what vocational goal they would like to pursue and also to those who have not yet determined their vocational goal. Vocational counseling services are provided throughout the course of the relationship between WorkAbility III and student.
Career Exploration: Career exploration services are provided in order to assist students who have not clearly defined their vocational goal. These services are provided in conjunction with Lori Contreras’s, Occupational Opportunities class at the North City Campus on Aero Drive
Vocational Training Support: Vocational Training Support services are provided by WorkAbility III staff to assist students while they are participating in academic and/or certificate programs. These services may include assistance with DSPS services, communication with instructors, volunteer or internship placements while pursuing their degree, and assistance with accommodations while participating in a volunteer or internship assignment.
Work Experience/Internships: WorkAbility III staff have formed mutually-beneficial relationships with local businesses in order to provide internship opportunities for students participating in the WorkAbility III program. Work experience and internships opportunities are recommended to students in order to provide valuable work experience, thereby enhancing their marketability once they have completed their degree or certificate.
Job Search Resources: These services take the form of job leads and labor market info (LMI) which provides students with valuable information about the local business community pre and post-graduation. WorkAbility III staff are specially (remove) trained to find opportunities in an efficient and individualized manner based upon the student’s vocational goal. WorkAbility III staff conduct traditional and non-traditional job searches to ensure that the targeted leads , job announcements, and resources match with the student’s abilities, skills, work experience, and vocational goal.
Job Seeking Skills Training: These services take the form of resume writing, videotaped mock interviews, interview preparation, informational interviews, and individualized job searches. These services are provided to students with the intention that they will be able to conduct these activities independently during and after their relationship with WorkAbility III.
Worksite Monitoring: Worksite monitoring services are provided to assist both the WorkAbility III student and employer with accommodations and other job-related issues that may present themselves. These services have proven beneficial by increasing retention and satisfaction among both employers and students.
On-the-Job Accommodations: WorkAbility III staff are trained to work with employers and students regarding reasonable accommodations. WorkAbility III staff have knowledge and experience working with employers and students to determine reasonable accommodations that meet the needs of both parties. WorkAbility III staff have received formal training regarding accessibility and accommodation issues and they have experience contacting the Job Accommodation Network (JAN) to assist both student and employer.
